Katarina Witt began ice skating when she was five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Her coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt was able to make her mark by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Since then, Witt's elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic victory Katarina Wit was awarded gold medals in women's ice skating during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after an intensely competitive contest. A few years later she was able to win an even tighter contest. The free skater lost however, she took home the gold medal for the mandatory figures and her program was short. Witt is the only time a repeat medalist in figure skating for women in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run as an actor. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd despite not winning the medal. The year 1995 was the year that Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
